“Bohemian Rhapsody” tells the story of a young boy born with the name of Farrokh Bulsara. Farrokh was born in 1946 in Zanzibar (now part of Tanzinia). Spending most of his childhood in India, his family moved to the UK in 1964. Soon after moving to the UK Farrokh continued to pursue his love for music and realising his name may hold him back he changed it. From that moment on Farrokh Bulsara no longer existed. He was forever known as Freddie Mercury.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” takes you through the journey from his humble beginnings to meeting friends and creating one of the most famous bands in British, and possibly world, music… Queen.

I don’t think I am spoiling things here by stating that Queen became one of the world’s best selling artists. Creating many classic anthems such as “We are The Champions”, “Another One Bites the Dust”, “Under Pressure” and, of course, the titular “Bohemian Rhapsody“.

I remember as a kid growing up with my mum listening to Queen. Her love for Freddie’s voice and the way he performed on stage. He was an icon and a natural showman that managed to weave effortlessly with the band that accompanied him. It was clear that although Queen was band of multiple members, Freddie saw himself as the star of the show.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” tells a similar story. The ups and downs of fame; the back and forth of the relationships between friends and band members; the power struggle between musicians who just want to play music for their fans and the record executives who care more about money.

Freddie is brilliantly played by Rami Malek. His look and his performance all match Mercury perfectly. He is supported by a great cast including Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor (Queen’s drummer), Joseph Mazzello, as John Deacon (bass guitarist) and Gwilym Lee as Brian May (lead guitarist). This film is a deep dive into the life of Freddie Mercury and the creation of Queen and ends with the famous performance at Wembley as part of the 1985 Live-Aid concert.

I really enjoyed “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The story was great (although apparently somewhat inaccurate) and the performances, especially the musical ones, were amazing. If you’re a fan of any of the music that Queen made, I know you’re going to enjoy this movie. You’ll laugh, possibly cry but definitely find your self tapping your feet.
