March 14th, 2077. 5 years since a mandatory memory wipe but yet Jack Harper (Tom Cruise), still has these dreams. Dreams of a woman he has never met in a place he has never been.
Jack is a repair technician for the drones that travel around what is left of the planet we call Earth. Half a century ago, a race called ‘Scavs’ escaped their own planet and destroyed our moon which caused the Earth to descend into chaos. Earthquakes and tsunamis destroyed most of the Earth and then the Scavs invaded the planet starting a nuclear war. Although the humans won the war, the Earth was not a safe place to live anymore and all the remaining civilisation fled to the TET, a temporary space station where people remained until they could be permanently rehomed on Saturn’s largest moon.
All that remained on planet Earth were the Scavs and hydrogen rigs which convert seawater into energy for the new colony. These are protected by the drones Jack and his communications officer and the only other human, Vick (Andrea Riseborough).
With only two weeks left on their mission before they are able to retire to the TET with the rest of the human race, everything is running smoothly. Sally, the leader of the person they report to is very happy. She feels that Jack and Vick are an effective team. Although Vick is eager to finish their mission, Jack feels a connection to the Earth and even after all the destruction, he feels it is still his home.
During a scheduled drone run, Jack witnesses a ship falling to earth. He reports it to Vick who relays the information to Sally. Sally requests that Jack leave the area and allow the drones to take care of the ship and destroy any inhabitants, most likely Scavs. The curiosity gets the better if Jack and instead he goes for a closer look. Most of the individuals on the ship are dead, but one lives. Except that individual isn’t a Scav, It’s human…
This is a different type of sci-fi movie. The story is an original one and from start to finish, the story flows fast but clear and takes you on a great ride. Just when you think you know what is happening it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.
Aesthetically, this might be one of my favourite movies. The sets and the look of the movie are great. From Tower 49 where they live to the look of the drones to the look of the earth, everything adds to the telling of the story. The story really is key with this film. What I have told you above is simply the set-up. I haven’t even mentioned how the rest of the great cast such as Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau fit into the story.
Of course, this is not the perfect movie. There is a couple of things that make you sit and wonder what the hell is going on (since when was the World Series an American football game?), but these can be forgiven by most.
Oblivion was removed from Netflix in the past and the fact it was re-added can only be a sign that this movie is worth a watch. Of course, this is just my opinion so would love to hear your opinions.
