What would you do if you discovered everything you ever knew, everything you over loved wasn’t real?

“The Truman Show” stars Jim Carrey as just normal guy who is living his best life. He has a great job, an amazing wife, a beautiful home and wants for nothing. What Truman doesn’t know is that he is the star of a 24 hours-a-day reality show. Everything he sees and everything that happens is all scripted, he just doesn’t know it. Everybody he comes into contact with is an actor, here to play a particular part whether that be to simply be in the background or to change the direction of the show.

Of course people have tried to tell him the truth, but the truth was so ridiculous, that it was incomprehensible and of course anybody who went off script, was removed from the show and Truman was given a reason for their disappearance. His high school girlfriend tried to tell him about the show and the producers removed her and told Truman that she had moved to Fiji with her father.

After the show had been broadcasting for over 20 years and 10,000 episodes, Truman began to notice things. The same neighbour was always gardening at the same time and welcomed him with the same greeting. Every. Single. Day. The same cars were in the same traffic and then, of course, there is the giant spotlight that fell from the sky!!

The producers of the show encouraged a fear of water from an early age, to avoid Truman being tempted to cross over the bridge from the island he lives on. Every movement, every action is directed by the shows creator and the literal man in the moon Christof. From the moon Christof (Ed Harris) controls everything in the broadcast.

Will he ever discover the truth? What happens when he gets over his fear of water? I guess just like the millions who watch Truman’s every move, you’ll have to watch to find out.

I’m a big fan of Jim Carrey’s. From first seeing him in “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and “The Mask” back in 1994 I have probably seen every film he has made since. Known for his wacky characters in Ace and The Mask he is possibly best known for playing Lloyd in “Dumb and Dumber“, “The Truman Show” was his first dramatic role.

“The Truman Show” is a great film and although it’s now its over 20 years old, the themes still ring true now. With Big Brother supposedly watching our every move, what actions are put in place to steer society in a certain direction similar to how Truman is nudged in certain directions to placate the viewers that are watching over him.

“The Truman Show” still holds up as a great film. With a great performance by Carrey and backed up with a great scripts and cast to match. I suggest you give this old classic a watch.
