The Wizard of Oz still delights decades after it first came to screens.
There’s a reason 80 years after it’s release “The Wizard of Oz” continues to delight and engage new audiences. The story follows a young girl named Dorothy (Judy Garland) who, after her house gets caught in a hurricane, gets whisked off to a magical land named Oz. The house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East killing her much to the joy of the local Munchkins as they hail Dorothy a hero.
Guided by Glinda the Good Witch of the North, she sets off on a journey along the now iconic yellow brick road to reach the Emerald City to ask the great and powerful Wizard of Oz to send her home. Along her journey she meets new friends and must also avoid the Wicked Witch of the West who wants revenge for the death of her sister.
This film is almost perfect in every way. The magic and atmosphere that’s created through the memorable songs beautiful set pieces and the use of black and white and colour to further reflect the magic of Oz is simply wonderful. The fact that 80 years after it’s initial release people are still talking about this movie and it’s still finding new audiences and generations shows how it really has stood the test of time.
This film isn’t just recommended. It is a staple of cinematic history and is one of a very few select films I would consider absolutely essential viewing. Gather the children around the TV and let them enjoy the magic and experience while you take a trip down memory lane.
One of the greatest films ever made. Catch it now on Netflix while you’re staying home and staying safe.
