A bit of a different Tiny Tuesday for you this week, all of our mini reviewers are slowly settling back into school life. So this week I shall be reviewing ‘Horrible Histories’ without the help of a little buddy.

‘Horrible Histories is a Monty Pythonesquse look at all the bits of history that don’t get taught in school and is based on the popular books of the same name by Terry Deary (who makes several cameo appearances throughout the series). Each episode of ‘Horrible Histories’ takes an amusing but factual look at various historical eras including Stone Age, Roman, Greek and Victorian amongst others.

To show what fashion was like during various eras they do a Gok Wan style makeover sketch, and to show what diets were like they sketch an historical Ready Steady Cook. Shopping channels and news reports are also turned into historical sketches and all these different elements serve to keep the viewers captivated and the younger viewers learning without knowing that they are learning.

Each episode also features a song that teaches historical facts and will leave you laughing – the songs are so catchy that you’ll hear your children singing them days later. In fact the songs are so good that JR (6) knows that King George IV was the Regent King and that that means that he was just standing in because his Dad King George III was unwell.

The acting and writing by the ‘Horrible Histories’ team really is brilliant and the show will appeal to family members of all ages as well as being a good way to get children interested in history.
